It’s official: “Game” is now “Citizen Game”

Mar31
2009
Written by larry411

0331game2For those who have been following the interesting saga of this film, here’s the latest official news about the project known as Game, from co-writers/directors Neveldine and Taylor (Crank). The film’s ensemble cast features Gerard Butler, Michael C. Hall, Logan Lerman, Kyra Sedgwick, Milo Ventimiglia, John Leguizamo, Alison Lohman, Aaron Yoo, Amber Valletta, and Terry Crews.

At one point the film was known as Game. Then it was supposedly “untitled” and was going to get a new name (which some associated with the project denied, while others confirmed). Then it was Game again (unless it never wasn’t otherwise).

Is the Tribeca Film Festival dying a slow death?

Mar31

Written by larry411

0331GraveThe Tribeca Film Festival is in some serious trouble. There is no question about that. Their problems have been well documented in the press, as a recent Variety article points out.

For one, they have lost some major sponsors this year. Cadillac, a division of General Motors, has pulled out. Target is also gone. The number of films has been slashed.

“Lost Dream” unveils brand new official site, poster, trailer

Mar30

Written by larry411

0330pos2Every so often a film pops onto my radar long before it’s released, or even before filming begins. Such was the case with Lost Dream, the first feature from writer/director/editor Asif Ahmed.

It was shortly after I was blown away by All the Boys Love Mandy Lane at the 2006 Toronto International Film Festival that I discovered Lost Dream while seeking out the latest work from Michael Welch (Joan of Arcadia, Twilight), who immediately struck me as a talent to watch for.

Pictures from “45365″ World Premiere at 2009 SXSW Film Festival

45365bOn Saturday, March 14, I attended the World Premiere of 45365 at the 2009 SXSW Film Festival. The screening at the Austin Convention Center was followed by an entertaining and fun Q&A with filmmakers Bill, Turner, and Alex Ross.

45365 was literally a labor of brotherly love. Bill and Turner were co-directors and cinematographers, with Alex’s assistance. Bill edited the film.

My Toronto Top Picks, Adoration and Lymelife, about to hit theaters

Mar27

Written by larry411

Logo1Just yesterday I was happy to report that both my #1 and #2 Top Picks from the recently-concluded Sundance Film Festival had been acquired for distribution.

Here is further proof that the film festival cycle occasionally works as planned in getting independent films out to the wider audience (and validation of my choices).

Just a few weeks ago I was wondering why these films weren’t being noticed. Patience is a virtue.

My review of “True Adolescents” at SXSW Film Festival

TrueAdol3On Saturday, March 14, I attended the World Premiere of True Adolescents at the 2009 SXSW Film Festival.

As a journalist concentrating on independent films, my Holy Grail is what I like to call the “sweet little American indie.” This is writer/director Craig Johnson’s first feature and he’s hit the mark.

My review of “Moon” at SXSW Film Festival

Mar25

Written by larry411

Moon3I attended a screening of Moon at the 2009 SXSW Film Festival in the legendary Paramount Theatre. There wasn’t an empty seat in the 1300-capacity palace. Directed by Duncan Jones, Moon stars Sam Rockwell, one of our generation’s most powerful actors.

The notion of a film being unique seems unlikely in 2009. Not here. While Moon is a modern-day science fiction film set in the future, it pays homage to recent classics like Blade Runner and Alien. Viewers will be dazzled — fans of the genre will nod in approval.

My review of “The Immaculate Conception of Little Dizzle” at the SXSW Film Festival

Mar23

Written by larry411

Dizzle4I attended a screening of The Immaculate Conception of Little Dizzle at the 2009 SXSW Film Festival. It’s rare to find a film that’s truly original while remaining accessible. It might be an incredible work of art but if it’s not enjoyable nobody will see it outside the festival circuit anyway, so what’s the point?

There are certainly enough self-indulgent excesses from first-time directors out there.

Pictures from “My Suicide” N. American Premiere at 2009 SXSW Film Festival

0322suiOn Sunday, March 15, I attended the North American Premiere of My Suicide at the 2009 SXSW Film Festival. I travel to festivals for many reasons, but primarily I’m looking for the “sweet little American indie.” They are few and far between.

I found one at SXSW — although “sweet” and “little” may not apply. It’s more of a “heartwrenching big American indie.” This is one of those rare films that deserves the label “important.”

2009 SXSW Film Festival — My Top Picks

Mar21
2009
Written by larry411

SxswlogobThe 2009 SXSW Film Festival has come to an exciting conclusion and I’ve returned home to take stock of my experience there. Earlier I posted a brief wrapup. As in previous years, and as I do following every film festival (32 since the start of 2006), now it’s time to post my list of Top Picks.

This year I saw a total of 17 films. 13 were American. The other four films were from outside the U.S.

TrueAdol2On Saturday, March 14, I attended the World Premiere of True Adolescents at the 2009 SXSW Film Festival. It turned out to be one of those “sweet little American indies” that drives me to attend festivals.

First-time writer/director Craig Johnson attended with lead actor Mark Duplass (The Puffy Chair, Humpday) and his two young co-stars, Bret Loehr and Carr Thompson.

DizzleOn Sunday, March 15, I attended a screening of The Immaculate Conception of Little Dizzle at the SXSW Film Festival. The film is truly original yet accessible. It mixes drama and comedy, as do most quality indies I see at festivals. But it manages to almost create a new genre — one part horror, one part political thriller, one part stoner comedy, and many parts that ultimately results in a cinematic mindf*ck.
