How to do the Toronto Film Festival – real tips for real people #2

Aug31
2009
Written by larry411

Tiffg-white12There are three basic considerations when deciding how much time is needed from the moment one film ends until your next screening begins. The first I discussed yesterday — the Q&A. Allow for anywhere from ten minutes to a half hour for that. Average is 15-20 minutes. The second consideration is travel time. I’ll cover that in this entry.

How to do the Toronto Film Festival – real tips for real people #1

Written by larry411

Tiffg-white12Many articles show up at this time of year about “how to do the festival.” Some are very good. Many simply appear to be marketing tools. Best gyms? Are you serious?!? If you have time to work out you don’t belong here.

So I will attempt to offer some real tips for real people, the festivalgoers who want to pack as many films into their days in Toronto as possible and not end up in the hospital.

Why my film festival selections may seem unusual

Written by larry411

Tiffg-white10In her indieWIRE blog today, Anne Thompson picks 30 “must-see movies” at the 2009 Toronto International Film Festival.

As much as I respect and admire Ms. Thompson and her opinions, I’m proud to say that my own list only includes nine of them. I’ve seen many other journalists’ selections and have reacted in a similar fashion. Contrarian am I? No.

“How To Be” R1 DVD RELEASE DATE, stars Robert Pattinson of “The Twilight Saga”

Aug27
2009
Written by larry411

0827rob2File this one under “no-brainer.” IFC Films has announced that they will release How To Be on R1 DVD November 17. Starring The Twilight Saga’s Robert Pattinson, the British indie had a 15 month run on the international festival circuit where it was honored with several awards. Pattinson won Best Actor at the Strasbourg International Film Festival and director Oliver Irving won the New Orleans Film Festival’s Audience Award.

Pattinson’s considerable talents go beyond acting, though, as he is also showcased on the film’s soundtrack performing original songs and classics by artists including The Roches, Captain Beefheart, and Love.

More recently I attended the official theatrical premiere at Showcase Cinemas in Worcester, Massachusetts in May. My report from the event is posted here along with pictures of the premiere arrivals, Q&A, and afterparty.

Pictures of Xavier Samuel (Eclipse) and cast in stills from “Newcastle”

Written by larry411

0728new2Once in a while a film comes along which tries to be bold, daring, and provocative while still retaining enough “warm and fuzzy’ to appeal to American audiences. The result is usually a self-indulgent train wreck that smacks of too many engineers in the locomotive. First time writer/director Dan Castle attempts it in Newcastle, and the result will leave audiences wide-eyed with amazement.

I wrote that in my review of Newcastle after attending the World Premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York in April 2008.

Written by larry411

Tiffg-white9Yesterday I posted some recommendations for the upcoming 34th Toronto International Film Festival. There were 27 selections from A-S. Today I’ll wrap up the alphabet with seven more titles from T-Z.

As I said yesterday, I’m still a long way from setting up my calendar (the schedule just came out today) but these are just a few films which look promising as I perused the list of 271 feature-length titles.

“Cirque du Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant” OFFICIAL INT’L POSTER & HD TRAILER

Aug21
2009
Written by larry411

0821chrCirque du Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant (formerly just Cirque du Freak) opens October 23 at 2500+ locations from Universal Pictures. Directed by Paul Weitz (brother of Chris Weitz, director of The Twilight Saga: New Moon), is based on the popular series of novels by Darren Shan. I’ll let the reader draw the ironic coincidences between the film’s title change, the director, and a set of films based on another popular series of novels.

In this first story of what we presume will be a successful franchise, a young boy named Darren Shan — fictionally autobiographical? — meets a mysterious man at the Cirque du Freak, a traveling show of mysticism and magic.

2009 ANGELUS STUDENT FILM FESTIVAL ANNOUNCES FINALISTS IN LIVE ACTION, ANIMATION & DOCUMENTARY CATEGORIES

27 Chosen From 556 Submissions
Student Filmmakers Compete for Nearly $50,000 in Cash and Prizes

HOLLYWOOD, Calif. – The 2009 Angelus Student Film Festival has announced that 27 finalists have been selected in three categories – live action, animation and documentary – from 556 entries, representing 185 film schools in nearly 30 countries, including Czech Republic, Finland, Croatia, Singapore, El Salvador, Russia and Tahiti. Since its inception in 1996, more than 5,000 films have been submitted to the annual competition.
A jury comprised of film industry professionals from the fields of live action, documentary and animation will convene and judge the films within their specialization. The winning films will then be announced and screened at the Angelus Student Film Festival, to be held at the Directors Guild of America on Saturday, Sept. 19, at 5:30 p.m.
Nearly $50,000 in cash and prizes will be presented to the winning filmmakers, including the coveted $10,000 Patrick Peyton Award for Excellence in Filmmaking, one of the highest cash awards for student filmmakers in the industry.

Currently in its 14th year, the international festival honors and showcases future filmmakers as they explore and create works that respect the dignity of the human person. Family Theater Productions created the Angelus Student Film Festival in 1996 and continues to conduct the annual festival.

The Angelus Student Film Festival will honor its 2009 finalists at a luncheon on Aug. 21 at Family Theater Productions’ headquarters on Sunset Boulevard.

MovieMaker Magazine named Angelus one of the “25 Festivals Worth the Entry Fee” and included it in its previous “Best of” issue. The festival was highlighted for its large cash prizes for a low entry fee and also its “commitment to cultural diversity.”

Festival sponsors include Mole-Richardson, a film lighting company; Priddy Brothers, an indie film production company; California Pizza Kitchen; Video Symphony and The Peter Glenville Foundation, which not only provided underwriting for the 2006 – 2008 Angelus screening and awards ceremonies, but has expanded its commitment to fund other screening events of the Angelus winners. These have included screenings in Park City, Utah, at the Windrider Forum during the Sundance Film Festival; in the Czech Republic, co-sponsored with the Film and TV School of the Academy of the Performing Arts in Prague (FAMU); and in Rome as the part of the NetOne/Focolare-hosted event, and at the University of Notre Dame in Indiana.

“Each year we are gratified by the quality and vision of the films submitted, as well as by the scope and array of subjects,” said Monika Moreno, director of the Angelus Student Film
Festival, adding that although there are certain observable trends in a given year, the line-up of finalists consistently display the redemptive, hopeful and thought-provoking themes reflected in the Angelus mission statement.”

Since 1947, Angelus founder Family Theater Productions has been creating award-winning radio, television and cinema programs which celebrate the dignity of the human person and the value of the family.  Hundreds of high-profile actors have appeared in Family Theater’s productions.

Xavier Samuel (Eclipse) to appear at “The Loved Ones” screening at Toronto Film Festival

Written by larry411

0820xavOn July 16th I reported on the casting of Australian actor Xavier Samuel in the forthcoming The Twilight Saga: Eclipse. Then on July 22nd I was happy to pass on the news that his new film The Loved Ones would be having its International Premiere at the Toronto Film Festival in September.

I cover that event every year and will be at the screening. Even though Eclipse will be shooting in Vancouver, I reported at the time of my article that Xavier would “likely” attend but, of course, I could not report it as fact until it was confirmed. Now it has been.
