Film festivals take place all year long — many more than most people realize — but there are essentially two major seasons for them, Spring and Fall. The Fall festival season kicks off with Toronto, which I just returned from, as readers of this blog no doubt know as I posted over 30 articles with daily wrapups, reviews, pictures, and videos over the past couple of weeks.

Many more are now taking place or are about to, concurrently and overlapping, making it impossible for any journalist to cover them all. There are often a dozen going on at any given time from now until December.

Almost two months ago I had the pleasure of announcing the Vampire Film Festival. Just when you thought it was safe to come out after twilight, this juicy event is emerging to take New Orleans by the neck.

In addition to an international slate of over 50 films in the Vampire, Gothic and Mythic genres, Vampire Fest will include panels, fabulous costume parties, fashion shows, and performance artists. The festival will take place around the beautiful Vieux Carré and the Garden District from October 23-26.

I attended the North American Premiere of A Single Man at the 2009 Toronto International Film Festival. This is the first foray into film for esteemed fashion designer Tom Ford, directing from his own script based on the Christopher Isherwood novel. In a word, A Single Man is a triumph.

The premiere was held at the elegant Isabel Bader Theatre. After the screening, director Tom Ford joined stars Colin Firth and Julianne Moore onstage for an exciting Q&A.

Video of “Cirque du Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant” World Premiere Q&A at Fantastic Fest

The World Premiere of Cirque du Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant took place earlier tonight at Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas. Formerly titled just Cirque du Freak, Universal Pictures releases at 2500+ locations on October 23.

Directed by Paul Weitz (brother of Chris Weitz, director of The Twilight Saga: New Moon), the film is based on the popular series of novels by Darren Shan. I’ll let the reader draw the ironic coincidences between the film’s title change, the director, and a set of films based on another popular series of novels.

My review of “Daybreakers” at 2009 Toronto International Film Festival

I attended the World Premiere of Daybreakers at the 2009 Toronto International Film Festival. Like many genre films being screened here, it’s another fascinating hybrid — let’s call this one vampire sci-fi action adventure.

This Australian horror film (is it something in the water?) was written and directed by brothers Michael and Peter Spierig, the very same filmmakers who closed down the legendary Uptown Theatre in Toronto with Undead in 2003.

My 30th & final film here at the 2009 Toronto International Film Festival was the World Premiere of Whip It, the impressive directorial debut of Drew Barrymore (who also stars). What a great way to close out my experience here in lovely Canada.

Barrymore works with a Shauna Cross script (based on her own novel Derby Girl) and an all-star cast featuring Ellen Page, Marcia Gay Harden, Daniel Stern, Kristen Wiig, Landon Pigg, Jimmy Fallon, Eve, and Juliette Lewis.

I attended the North American Premiere of Same Same But Different at the 2009 Toronto International Film Festival. Directed by Detlev Buck from a Ruth Toma script, this is a classic tale of star-crossed lovers featuring young David Kross and Apinya Sakuljaroensuk as Ben and Sreykeo, a German boy and Cambodian girl brought together by chance and destined to be together.

Most won’t recognize the name but will remember Kross’ brave performance as Kate Winslet’s young lover in the award-winning The Reader.

My review of “Suck” at 2009 Toronto International Film Festival

I attended the World Premiere of Suck at the 2009 Toronto International Film Festival. To simply say that this film is an original hybrid of genres doesn’t do it justice. I’d label it a rock ‘n roll vampire musical comedy road movie. Talk about a unique concept.

Writer/director/composer/lead actor Rob Stefaniuk has crafted a work of pure genius. The basic premise is simple: rock band The Winners, like most small-town acts, will do whatever it takes to make it in the music world. They stumble upon an “interesting” formula and hit the road.

I attended the North American Premiere of The Good Heart at the 2009 Toronto International Film Festival, and marked it down as my first must-see. Brian Cox and Paul Dano (reunited after the 2001 indie classic L.I.E.) pull off a tour de force that left me breathless in this character piece from Icelandic writer/director Dagur Kári.

The film opens with Lucas (Dano) barely eking out a living in a cardboard box under a rusty highway overpass, with only a scrawny kitten as a companion.

My review of “George A. Romero’s Survival of the Dead” at 2009 Toronto International Film Festival

I attended the North American Premiere of George A. Romero’s Survival of the Dead at the 2009 Toronto International Film Festival. When the master himself decides to make a new “…of the Dead” movie, you know you can expect certain things: great kills, visual effects, shocks, and gore. Where it goes from there depends on plot and cast.

So here’s the premise: a zombie western set on an island off the coast of Delaware. Anyone else might pitch that story idea and have a door slammed in the face. But this is George A. Romero. Only he could pull it off, and he does it.
