Pics of Tom McCarthy, Paul Giamatti, Amy Ryan, Alex Shaffer Q&A at “Win Win” SXSW 2011

Written by larry411

On Monday, March 14, 2011, I attended a gala screening of Win Win at the SXSW Film Festival in Austin, Texas. The event took place in the stunning 1200-seat Paramount Theatre, built in 1915. The film was featured in the Headliners section.

Directing from his own script, this sweet little American indie is the third feature for Tom McCarthy (The Station Agent, The Visitor). The movie stars Paul Giamatti, Amy Ryan, Bobby Cannavale, Jeffrey Tambor, and real-life New Jersey State Champion high school wrestler Alex Shaffer as Kyle.

My pictures of Edgar Wright, Joe Cornish Q&A at “Attack the Block” World Premiere SXSW 2011 + capsule review

Written by larry411

On Saturday, March 12, 2011 I attended the gala World Premiere of Attack the Block at the SXSW Film Festival. The sold-out screening took place at downtown Austin’s Alamo Ritz. The film was a selection in the Midnighters section.

Set in a “typical” working class neighborhood in gritty South London, this dark comedic drama features a diverse group of teens out to defend their neighborhood from a mysterious unseen force. In my requisite spoiler-free fashion, I can say little more regarding the plot although one can rest assured that this film is NOT what it appears to be at first glance. Executive producer (and accomplished director in his own right) Edgar Wright and writer/director Joe Cornish have teamed up to bring to the screen (finally) a totally unique take on life in hardscrabble London and the restless bands of kids who roam the streets at night.

2011 SXSW Film Festival — My Top Picks + pictures & interviews

Mar18
2011
Written by larry411

The fun-filled 2011 SXSW Film Festival has come to an exciting conclusion and I’ve returned home to take stock of my whirlwind week in Austin, Texas. This was the second year I used Twitter to write post-screening capsule reviews of all the films I saw. Hopefully you followed along and were able to join me in experiencing the events in real time.

The quality of the lineup was truly extraordinary, as usual, resulting in one of the most memorable experiences I’ve had there in the six years I’ve been attending. This year’s festival wowed me from the very first screening so it’s a formidable challenge for me to narrow down my favorites to just a few. But as in previous years, and as I do following every film festival I attend (53 since the start of 2006), this wrapup will conclude with my list of Top Picks.

Audio interview with “Detention” star Josh Hutcherson at 2011 SXSW Film Festival

0318josh The name Josh Hutcherson should be quite familiar to readers of this blog. I first had the privilege of meeting the young actor at the 2008 Los Angeles Film Festival. The event was the star-studded World Premiere of Journey to the Center of the Earth in 3D, co-starring Brendan Fraser. It was organized like the Oscars — nobody could even approach the theater without an invitation-only ticket, and the public was cordoned off behind barricades on the opposite side of street. The venue was the magnificent Village Theatre, originally part of the Fox chain, built in 1930. The 1400-seat house was packed to capacity.

I was assigned to shadow Josh and photograph him after the screening as he posed for pictures and signed autographs for his fans.

Andrew Lanham headshot3 While at the 2011 SXSW Film Festival I sat down with screenwriter Andrew Lanham, who’s won the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Nicholl Fellowship in Screenwriting for his script “The Jumper of Maine.” On March 26 the Austin, Texas native will be honored at “The Reading,” a staged reading of his screenplay at Ballroom Marfa, a contemporary cultural arts space in Marfa, Texas.

Lanham is in his final year of the University of Texas at Austin RTF (Radio, Television, and Film) Graduate MFP Program. His script also won the Drama Screenplay Competition and the Latitude Productions Screenplay Award at the 2010 Austin Film Festival.

My pictures of Jake Gyllenhaal, Michelle Monaghan, Vera Farmiga, Duncan Jones Q&A at “Source Code” SXSW 2011 + capsule review

On Friday, March 11, 2011 I attended the gala World Premiere of Source Code, the official Opening Night Film of the SXSW Film Festival. The sold-out screening took place at downtown Austin’s historic 1500-seat Paramount Theater. The film was a selection in the Headliners section.

Source Code has so much going for it — Moon director Duncan Jones, the always-compelling Jake Gyllenhaal, and wunderkind producer Mark Gordon (The Day After Tomorrow, 2012, CBS’ Criminal Minds), for a start. There’s Michelle Monaghan (Due Date, Trucker, Gone Baby Gone) and Vera Farmiga, who wowed me in Up in the Air and with Keanu Reeves in Henry’s Crime at the 2009 and 2010 Toronto International Film Festivals, respectively.

The film was one of eight titles in the prestigious Narrative Feature Competition, selected from over 1000 entries. Directing from her own script, this American indie marks the feature debut for Aimee Lagos.

SXSW Film Festival – Real Tips For Real People #2

0309 Second of a five-part series

Yesterday, in Real Tips For Real People #1, I offered some general advice for travelers headed to the SXSW Film Festival, which begins Friday and runs through March 19. In this entry: how to get to and around downtown Austin, Texas.

You’ll probably be flying into Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, ranked best in North America in the Airport Service Quality Awards. Renting a car is always an option but isn’t really necessary to get from venue to venue — many are within walking distance of each other as well as the hotels and Convention Center.

SXSW Film Festival – Real Tips For Real People #1

030711First of a five-part series

SXSW 2011 runs from March 11-19 in rockin’ Austin, Texas. I’ve attended 52 film festivals since the start of 2006 and there isn’t another town in America that hosts events like this with as much spirit and unbridled enthusiasm.

Readers of this blog know that my annual coverage of SXSW gushes with accolades for the venues there — arguably the best in America. Many of my Top Picks from all festivals over the past few years (of over 800 in total) came out of this film festival. The event hasn’t changed much from its homespun early days and I believe it is a required trip for independent film lovers.
