2012 Sundance Film Festival Competition Lineup

Nov30
2011
Written by larry411

December begins tomorrow, which means it’s time for independent film fans to turn their attention to the many awards, nominations, and festival selections which will be rolled out on almost a daily basis. There is certainly no shortage of awards ceremonies but only one major event in America, the Film Independent Spirit Awards, focuses solely on indies. Nominations were announced yesterday and are posted here on my blog. The awards will be telecast on IFC Channel on February 25, 2012.

In the festival world, the announcements of the 2012 Sundance Film Festival program began today with the Competition Lineup and will continue tomorrow with the Spotlight, Park City at Midnight, NEXT, and New Frontier programs, the international documentary premieres on Monday, and the short film program next Tuesday, December 6. The 2012 festival will be held from January 19-29 in Park City, Utah. The Slamdance Film Festival, a smaller and spunkier event which takes place on Main Street during Sundance, will also be announcing its lineup soon.

2011 New York Film Critics Circle Award Winners

Written by larry411

This morning I posted the Film Independent Spirit Awards nominations. In the upcoming days we’ll see many more such lists, including the winners of the National Board of Review Awards, British Independent Film Awards, European Film Awards, Boston Society of Film Critics Awards, Los Angeles Film Critics Association Awards, and New York Film Critics Online Awards, along with the American Film Institute’s Top 10 of the Year and the nominees for the Critics’ Choice Awards.

Today the New York Film Critics Circle weighed in with their choices for the best in cinema of 2011. This organization is arguably the most prestigious and influential of the numerous critics groups in the country as many look to their choices for an indication of what direction the Academy Awards will take. The NY critics’ selection of The Artist for Best Film and its director Michel Hazanavicius is in line with today’s Spirit Awards lavishing five nominations on the (arguably) French film.

2012 Film Independent Spirit Awards Nominations

Nov29

Written by larry411

The Film Independent Spirit Awards are very close to my heart as they’re essentially the Oscars for indies and often foretell some of those awards as well. For the past several years many of the films which were nominated for (and eventually won) Spirit Awards went on to dominate the Academy Awards.

You can count on an irreverent 27th Anniversary ceremony on Saturday, February 25. Unlike the staid Academy Awards taking place the following night, this event is a no-holds barred party held in a tent on the beach in Santa Monica. The program airs on IFC.
