Watch Bel Ami New Official Trailer, latest premiere + distribution news

Dec22
2011
Written by larry411

Few upcoming films have garnered as much attention from my readers and Twitter followers as Declan Donnellan’s Bel Ami. Based on the novel by Guy de Maupassant, the movie stars Robert Pattinson (you’ve heard of him) as George Duroy, an ambitious young man in Paris circa 1890s. The film is said to be fast-paced, provocative, and sexy.

With an all-star cast featuring Christina Ricci, Uma Thurman, Kristin Scott Thomas, and Colm Meaney, Bel Ami is a co-production of UK firms Redwave Films, XIX Entertainment, and Protagonist Pictures, along with Italy’s giant Rai Films. It opens in some European territories, including the UK, on March 2 with a worldwide rollout in the weeks to follow.

“We Need to Talk About Kevin” moves up NY & LA release dates

Dec21
2011
Written by larry411

We Need to Talk About Kevin is one of the year’s most talked-about films, and now moviegoers will be able to see it a bit earlier. Distributor Oscilloscope Laboratories announced today that the film will now open in New York on Friday, January 13th, 2012 at the Lincoln Plaza Cinemas and Angelika Film Center, and at the Arclight Hollywood Theater in Los Angeles on Friday, January 20th, 2012.

“We had an amazing one-week qualifying run in December where the film’s attendance exceeded even our highest expectations,” said Oscilloscope President David Fenkel. “The reviews were stellar and the word of mouth is only growing. It’s an intense psychological thriller that audiences feel the need to talk about afterwards. By definition this is an ideal ‘Word of Mouth’ film. Theaters are excited to have a quality arthouse genre film to bring in younger audiences.”

Dec21
2011
Written by larry411

Today the 2012 Slamdance Film Festival announced its lineup of Special Screenings and shorts. There are eight feature-length films in Special Screenings: three narratives and five documentaries, including five World Premieres. The Shorts Program features 75 films, including Special Screenings, Live Action Competition, Documentary Competition, Animation, $99 Special, Anarchy Shorts, and the World Premiere of a special program of new Iranian shorts never seen outside the country, “Made In Iran: 7 Short Premieres.” Last week I posted the Competition Lineup.

“This year’s Special Screenings in every way represent the maverick spirit of Slamdance, from Jonathan Demme’s documentary Neil Young Journeys, to the premiere of a never before seen Ed Wood television pilot, and the poetic realism of Tibetan filmmaker Pema Tseden’s Old Dog,” said Slamdance President and Co-Founder Peter Baxter. “If you want to see the truest representation of bold, independent filmmaking, Slamdance is the place to be.”

The Palm Springs International Film Festival is the first major event of the 2012 festival year. The PSIFF competition lineup has just been announced, including the New Voices/New Visions and John Schlesinger Awards sections. The inaugural Arabian Nights program has also been revealed, a new section focusing on Arab Cinema. PSIFF will also screen 40 of the 63 submitted films in the Academy Awards’ Best Foreign Language Film category in the Awards Buzz section.

“This is the most wide-ranging and cohesive line-up of films and special events the Festival has ever assembled,” said Festival Director Darryl Macdonald. “From our special showcase of new Arabian cinema to the beefed-up archival section and the inclusion of an exhibition focusing on allied arts (with the Marilyn: Intimate Exposures program), the PSIFF has kicked it up a notch, enhancing its standing as an event presenting the best of contemporary world cinema with a celebration of all things cinematic.”

2012 Sundance Film Festival adds features to lineup

Dec20
2011
Written by larry411

Earlier I posted the complete lineup of feature-length films in competition and out-of-competition at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival. Films in the Premieres section were unveiled after that, followed by the Shorts Program. The screening schedule became available last week.

Four additional features have now been added to the lineup. Late additions to the Festival in recent years have included Miranda July’s The Future and Lisa Cholodenko’s The Kids Are All Right. “Each of these four films is an accomplishment in its own right, and collectively, their addition to our program allows us to present a broader look at independent filmmaking,” said Sundance Film Festival Director John Cooper. “With these four films, we will present a total of 117 feature-length films at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival – a strong indication of the vitality of the independent film community.”

The aims are to promote the art of criticism, to uphold its integrity in practice, to foster and safeguard members’ professional interests, to provide opportunities to meet, and to support the advancement of the arts. The awards are voted for by over 120 UK film critics, broadcasters and writers.

Topping the list with six nominations each are Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and Drive. Five nods apiece went to We Need to Talk About Kevin and A Separation.

My Top Picks of 2011 – The Best Festival Indies of the Year

Dec19
2011
Written by larry411

As 2011 comes to a close, it’s time to take stock of the year in cinema and post the requisite “Best of” list. However, this one won’t look like any other you may see. And for good reason. Rules, disclaimers, and those good reasons follow for those who are as passionate about the subject as I am.

My world revolves around independent films and festivals so this list includes only indies which I saw at film festivals for the first time in 2011. I specify “first time” because there are several which I saw in 2010 but were still on the festival circuit this year and saw again. Obviously I don’t count those even though they may still have been among the best I saw at those particular 2011 festivals.

Next, defining an independent film is something else entirely. I try to avoid including films produced and/or distributed by Hollywood studios or major studio specialty arms like Fox Searchlight, even though I may have seen them at festivals. However, in some cases there are truly independent films which were acquired for distribution just prior to, during, or after the festival in which I saw it. In those cases I simply use my best judgment.

2011 Chicago Film Critics Association Awards

Dec19
2011
Written by larry411

One of the last major critics’ organizations to weigh in with their awards each year is the Chicago Film Critics Association (CFCA). This group is made up of print, electronic, and online journalists representing the country’s third largest metropolitan area. Held annually, the CFCA’s newsworthy and prestigious awards honor outstanding film works, performances, and individuals. The parent association was founded in 1990 by film critic Sue Kiner after the successful launch of the Chicago Film Critics Awards in 1989.

Adding to the pile of critics’ accolades it’s received so far, The Tree of Life topped the list with four awards, taking home the honors for Best Picture, Director (Terrence Malick), Supporting Actress (Jessica Chastain), and Cinematography (Emmanuel Lubezki). Chastain was a double winner, also taking home Supporting Actress honors for Take Shelter. Michael Shannon nabbed another Best Actor kudo for his performance in Take Shelter while the award for Best Actress went to Michelle Williams for My Week With Marilyn. Best Supporting Actor honors went to Albert Brooks for Drive.
