“Father’s Chair” capsule review & my pictures of Wagner Moura at the Sundance Film Festival Q&A

Jan31

Written by larry411

On Friday, January 20, 2012 I attended the gala International Premiere of Father’s Chair (A Cadeira do Pai) at the Sundance Film Festival. The sold-out screening was held in the historic Egyptian Theatre. Hailing from Brazil, the film was a selection in the World Cinema Dramatic Competition section.

Theo (Wagner Moura) and his wife Branca (Mariana Lima) are in a broken marriage. Their 14-year-old son Pedro (Bras Moreau Antunes) is (age-appropriately) rebellious and distant, especially from his father. Theo is estranged from his own dad, as well, and the cycle continues as anger and lack of affection pass down from one male generation to another.

On Tuesday, September 24, 2012 I attended the gala World Premiere of Goats at the Sundance Film Festival. The sold-out screening was held in the1270-seat Eccles Theatre. The film was a selection in the Premieres section.

Generally, the terms “epic” and “coming of age” are mutually exclusive in cinema. That tried and true genre, particularly at film festivals, usually describes a simple, low budget indie with a classic story. Only the names, pretty faces, and hit-filled soundtrack are changed.

On Saturday, January 21, 2012 I attended the gala World Premiere of The First Time at the Sundance Film Festival. The sold-out screening was held in the 1270-seat Eccles Theatre. The film was a selection in the U.S. Dramatic Competition section.

Known primarily as an adept television writer and director (Freaks and Geeks, Dawson’s Creek, Californication), Jonathan Kasdan got a taste of the big screen while acting in six of his father Lawrence’s films, including 2003′s Dreamcatcher. The younger Kasdan stepped behind the camera to write and direct his first feature film almost seven years ago (In the Land of Women).

2012 Sundance Film Festival — My Top Picks

Jan28
2012
Written by larry411

The spectacular 2012 Sundance Film Festival has come to an exciting conclusion and I’ve returned to sunny South Florida to take stock of my whirlwind week in snowy Utah. This was the third year I used Twitter to write post-screening capsule reviews of all the films I saw. Hopefully you followed along and were able to join me in experiencing the events in real time.

This year’s lineup was truly extraordinary, as usual. Sundance 2012 wowed me from the very first film, so it’s a formidable challenge for me to narrow down my favorites. But, as I do following every film festival (55 since the start of 2006), this wrapup will conclude with my list of Top Picks.

“The Artist” leads eclectic group of nominees from Boston’s Chlotrudis Society

Jan27
2012
Written by popcornnroses

Boston MA – Nominations for the 18th annual Chlotrudis Awards were finalized by the film group’s nominating committee last weekend.  At the top of the heap, collecting Best Film, Director, Actor and Actress nods among its 7 nominations was the silent people can’t stop talking about, THE ARTIST.

Four other films received 4 or more nominations, including fellow Best Movie nominees ANOTHERYEAR, director Mike Leigh’s latest, and the low-budget independent WEEKEND, both clear-eyed studies of relationships in today’s England, featuring acting tour de forces. The other front runner films are Lars von Trier’s dystopian MELANCHOLIA and MARTHA MARCY MAY MARLENE, with its impressive directorial and lead actress debuts.

In all, 40 films received nominations; and 19 countries were represented, with US films making up just over 30%.  There were other multiple nominees, among them three-timers PARIAH, South Korea’s POETRY, A SEPARATION from Iran, and Takashi Miike’s 13 ASSASSINS.

In the Society’s most prestigious category, the Buried Treasure, the final nominees were THE ARBOR, a unique documentary about the late UK playwright Andrea Dunbar; the micro-budget LITTLEROCK following two Japanese siblings stranded in the US; THESE AMAZING SHADOWS, about The National Film Registry’s critical work to save historic films; the Canadian TRIGGER, an emotional study of two women’s lifelong friendship; and Thai director Apichatpong Weerasethakul’s newest, UNCLE BOONMEE WHO CAN RECALL HIS PAST LIVES.

The Buried Treasure is the only category with eligibility requirements: nominated films must have earned less than $250,000 in its U.S. theatrical run, and members can submit no more than 3 entries for films they feel strongly were given distributional short shrift and deserve a wider audience.   A shortlist is then compiled before the final vote, and those selections are published on the group’s website and in a separate press release.  Once the final ballot is set, all members voting in the category must verify that they have watched in full all of the nominated films.

The Chlotrudis Society for Independent Film highlights its commitment to independent and foreign film in style, holding its CHLOTRUDIS AWARDS ceremony in early spring.  This latest edition will be held Sunday March 18th at the historic Brattle Theatre, and the public is invited to join Chlotrudis members, nominees and special guests in the celebration.

At the ceremony, Chlotrudis also presents special awards that honor individuals or films for particular distinction.  Past recipients Ellen Page (Breakthrough Award ‘05), Kerry Washington (Breakthrough Award ‘04), Beth Grant (Career So Far Award ‘09) and Philip Seymour Hoffman (first Hall of Fame inductee) are among those who have made the trek to Boston to be honored for their contributions to independent film.   This year’s recipients are still being finalized at press time.

The Chlotrudis Society for Independent Film is a Boston-based non-profit group that teaches people to view film actively and experience the world through independent film, and encourages discussion.  The group works with film festivals, local art-houses and theatres, production companies, directors and actors to bring creative, quality films to the attention of audiences and film-lovers.   Visit its website, www.chlotrudis.org, for more information, and join its Facebook page and twitter feed for the latest news.  Here is the complete list of the nominations for the 18th Annual Chlotrudis Awards:

2012 Berlin Film Festival announces more titles, including Bel Ami and special Haywire screening

Jan20
2012
Written by larry411

The 62nd Berlin International Film Festival (Berlinale) takes place from February 9-19 at the Berlinale Palast in Germany. A number of selections were announced in December. Last week, additional titles in the Competition, Berlinale Special, and Panorama Programmes were announced along with youth-oriented films in the Generation Kplus and Generation 14plus sections. Earlier this week the festival announced a dozen more films in the Berlinale Special section along with 19 documentaries in Panorama Dokumente.

The festival has now revealed six more titles in the Competition program, in addition to those announced previously. These include a film that has garnered more attention from my readers and Twitter followers than any other — Declan Donnellan’s Bel Ami. Based on the novel by Guy de Maupassant, the movie stars Robert Pattinson (you’ve heard of him) as George Duroy, an ambitious young man in Paris circa 1890s.

Reporting live from the 2012 Sundance Film Festival

Jan19
2012
Written by larry411

Hello from the 2012 Sundance Film Festival!

I’ve attended 54 film festivals since the start of 2006, but few as prestigious or breathtaking in scope than the Sundance Film Festival, held every January in Park City, Utah. Many of my Top Picks from all festivals over the past several years (of over 1000 in total) came out of Sundance. The event has changed quite a bit from its homespun early days but I still believe it’s worth the trip for independent film lovers.

Sundance was created by actor Robert Redford to be the premiere showcase of cutting-edge, independent cinema in America. Then it became more of a glitz and glamour Hollywood studio production replete with A-list stars and the paparazzi that inevitably follow them.

2012 BAFTA Awards Nominations

Jan16
2012
Written by larry411

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) has announced the nominations for the 2012 Orange British Academy Film Awards. Daniel Radcliffe and Holliday Grainger presided over the ceremony at BAFTA’s headquarters at 195 Piccadilly in London. The BAFTAs are considered the British counterpart to the Academy Awards here in the U.S., as well as an accurate bellwether. In fact, recent years’ awards correctly predicted most of the the acting winners at the Oscars. No other awards came close.

Leading the way with 12 nominations is The Artist. Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy is close behind with 11 while Hugo was nominated in nine categories. My Week with Marilyn takes six nods. The Help and War Horse are each nominated five times.

Written by larry411

The Gay and Lesbian Entertainment Critics Association has announced the winners of the 2012 Dorian Awards for the best in both film and television. GALECA is comprised of film and television critics, entertainment journalists, and pop culture critics who write on television and film for noteworthy print, online, and broadcast outlets in the United States. Formed in 2009, GALECA and its annual Dorian Awards toast the finest in movies, TV shows, and performances of all kinds, not just LGBT-centric. The Dorians are named with a nod to the great and gay wit Oscar Wilde.

Weekend took top honors for both Film of the Year and LGBT-Themed Film of the Year. Likewise, We Were Here won the Documentary and LGBT-Themed Documentary of the Year awards.

2012 SXSW Schedules Now Live

Jan16
2012
Written by larry411

In less than two months I’ll be arriving at the 2012 South by Southwest (SXSW) Film Conference & Festival. As readers of this blog know, of the many I attend each year, few film festivals can beat SXSW for sheer enjoyment, both in the quality of the program as well as the kickass rock ‘n roll setting in which it takes place. This will be my seventh year and I’m looking forward to heading back down to Austin, Texas, sitting in darkened theaters, and partying with true film lovers.

The excitement kicks off March 9 with nine days of the best that today’s cutting-edge filmmakers have to offer. Last week the Opening Night Film, The Cabin in the Woods, was revealed along with a handful of other titles.

2012 American Cinema Editors (ACE) Eddie Award Nominees

Jan16
2012
Written by larry411

It’s hard to keep track without a scorecard but the awards and nominations for the best of 2011 in movies continue to be announced. Today it’s the American Cinema Editors (ACE) revealing their nominees for the 62nd Annual ACE Eddie Awards.

Personally, this one carries a lot of weight in my book. It’s said that a film is “made” in the editing suite, and any director surely knows that a good editor is his/her best ally in bringing their creative vision to the screen (and vice-versa). Awards are handed out in four categories: Dramatic Feature, Comedy or Musical Feature, Animated Feature, and Documentary. The winners will be feted in a ceremony at the Beverly Hilton Hotel on February 18.

2012 Golden Globe Awards Winners

Jan15
2012
Written by larry411

The 69th Annual Golden Globe Awards were handed out tonight by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA). While these honors are thought by many to be a good indicator of Oscar potential, recent history has shown this not to be the case. But while the numerous critics’ nominations and awards revealed over the past couple of months can often be even more reliable in predicting who will win the Academy Awards, the Golden Globes have the highest public visibility and are considered by many to be almost equal in prestige to the Oscars.

The night’s big winner was The Artist, which took home three awards including Best Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical, Best Actor – Comedy or Musical (Jean Dujardin), and Best Original Score (Ludovic Bource). The Descendants picked up two of the top awards, including Best Motion Picture – Drama and Best Actor – Drama (George Clooney).

PNR Networks sites, podcast to triple festival coverage in 2012

Jan14
2012
Written by popcornnroses

PNR Networks, home to entertainment news sites Popcorn N Roses, Boston Popcorn, and Indie Film Spotlight as well as popular movie podcast Subject:CINEMA, will greatly expand its annual film festival coverage in 2012, nearly tripling the amount of festivals featured every year.

Since 2007, Subject:CINEMA has presented a rundown of films being featured at the four prestige January festivals – Sundance, Slamdance, Santa Barbara, and Palm Springs – on their annual “Fethival Of Film Fethivals” podcast. This year, the podcast will greatly expand the scope of their annual show, bumping the number of featured festivals up to TEN – more than twice the number of festivals previously covered on the show. In addition to the “big four”, the show has added full coverage to four other festivals occuring in January and February: The Victoria Film Festival (Victoria, BC – the first non-US festival to be featured); Festivus Film Festival (Denver, CO), Traildance (Duncan, OK) and Big Sky Documentary Film Festival (Missoula, MT).  These four festivals were selected as additions to the podcasts’ annual coverage from the dozens of various festivals for their reputations for quality, film pool, and fan approval.

In addition, beginning this year, the “Fethival” will also include rundowns of the big film competition entries at two of the most prestigious festivals in February and March – Berlinale in Berlin and South By Southwest (SXSW) in Austin TX.

January’s “Fethival Of Film Fethivals” show is often Subject:CINEMA’s third most-downloaded and listened to show of the year behind the podcast’s annual “Rising Stars list” show on July 4th  and the year-end “Poppies And Rosies” awards show on December 31st.

In 2011, Subject:CINEMA added a second “fethival” show to it’s lineup in “Boston Springs A Movie”, highlighting the local Boston film scene’s four springtime festivals – The Irish Film Festival, The Boston Underground Film Festival, The Boston International Film Festival, and the Independent Film Festival of Boston. The experimental show proved to be very popular, especially (and not surprisingly) with Boston film fans, and has been officially renamed “Boston Springs A Fethival” and has been added to the podcasts’ list of annual shows. It will premiere in mid-May.

2012 will see the addition of a THIRD “fethival”-specific podcast, “Subject:CINEMA’s Fall Fethival Fiesta”, in September. This latest “fethival” show, still in the planning and decision stages, is likely to focus on the fall season’s three big festivals – Toronto (Toronto, ON), Fort Lauderdale (Fort Lauderdale, FL), and FantasticFest (Austin TX) – as well as several smaller festivals including the super-secretive Telluride Film Festival (Telluride, CO) and the Woodstock Film Festival (Woodstock, NY) among others. The show will air sometime in late September 2012 and is planned as an annual show.

Subject:CINEMA also plans to do segments as part of their weekly show throughout the calendar year focusing on festivals that don’t fall into a timeframe where they can be included in one of the big “fethival” shows, including more complete coverage of SXSW in March, as well as Cannes, Los Angeles, Tribeca, Venice, London, Seattle, and others yet to be determined as the year progresses.

Festivals who might be interested in obtaining coverage for their festival are encouraged to contact SC Producer and co-host TC Kirkham with information on the festival and films scheduled to screen at the show’s email address – subjectcinema [at] popcornnroses.com. They are also encouraged to contact Indie Film Spotlight senior correspondant Larry Richman at larryifs [at] popcornnroses.com. And of course, filmmakers who are on the festival circuit are also encouraged to contact us at the same addresses – we are always on the lookout for filmmakers to interview and films to see that we can bring to the attention of our listeners and readers!
