The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) announced the winners of the 2012 Orange British Academy Film Awards in a spectacular ceremony hosted by Stephen Fry at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London. The BAFTAs are considered the British counterpart to the Academy Awards here in the U.S., as well as an accurate bellwether. In fact, recent years’ awards correctly predicted most of the the acting winners at the Oscars. No other awards came close.
Michel Hazanavicius’ The Artist topped all winners with seven, including Best Film, Director, Actor (Jean Dujardin), Original Screenplay, Original Music, Cinematography, and Costume Design. Despite being nominated in 11 categories, Tomas Alfredson’s Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy only won two awards, including Outstanding British Film and Adapted Screenplay.
