The 84th Academy Awards have now taken their place their place in cinematic history. Once again, independent films dominated the list, including Best Picture winner The Artist. This was the 20th time in the past 31 years that the top prize went to an indie. The Weinstein Company’s black & white silent film took home five awards, including Best Picture, Director (Michel Hazanavicius), Actor (Jean Dujardin), Original Score (Ludovic Bource), and Costume Design.
Tying with five trophies, representing the Hollywood Studios, was Paramount’s Hugo. It dominated the technical categories, taking home Oscars for Best Cinematography, Art Direction, Sound Editing, Sound Mixing, and Visual Effects.
