Cinema Paradiso’s Israeli Film Festival — My Top Picks + 7 capsule reviews + trailers

May30

Written by larry411

On Saturday, May 26 and Sunday, May 27 I attended the Israeli Film Festival in Sunrise, Florida. Sponsored by the Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival (FLIFF) and its year-round art house theater Cinema Paradiso, the weekend event was held at the Sunrise Civic Center.

The lineup consisted of seven different movies from Israel, spanning the years from 2004-2011. Although four of the seven had actually screened at festivals I covered, they were all titles I was unable to fit into my schedule at the time, so these were particularly exciting for me.

K-11 Official Teaser Trailer from writer/director Jules Stewart

May24
2012
Written by larry411

In a landscape increasingly filled with gritty independent films, here’s one that’s been hotly awaited. K-11 is a drama is set in a special lockup for gay and transgender prisoners in the Los Angeles County prison system. The “K-11″ unit is one place where the proverbial soap drop might take you one step further.

K-11 is the auspicious directorial debut for Jules Stewart, a veteran script supervisor, shooting from her own script. The cast is chock full of recognizable faces, including Goran Visnjic (Beginners, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo), Kate del Castillo (La Reina del Sur), Portia Doubleday (Youth in Revolt), D.B. Sweeney (Hard Ball), Jason Mewes (Clerks), Tommy ‘Tiny’ Lister (The Dark Knight), Tara Buck (True Blood, Justified), and Jules’ son Cameron Stewart. Daughter Kristen has a cameo, as well.

My pics of “Huff” World Premiere Red Carpet and Q&A at 2012 Texas Frightmare Weekend

May17
2012
Written by larry411

On Saturday, May 5, 2012 I attended the highly-anticipated World Premiere of Huff at Texas Frightmare Weekend. A capacity crowd of 600 packed into the Enterprise Ballroom at the Hyatt Regency DFW in Dallas, Texas.

In this twisted and gruesome tale, a mother steals drug money from her abusive boyfriend (“Huff,” played by the frighteningly brilliant Charlie O’Connell) for her three teenage daughters to seek better lives for themselves. A bloody pursuit ensues. In this masterfully clever take on the classic children’s fable The Three Little Pigs, the would-be father of three girls is both wolf and butcher. This big bad dad doesn’t just blow houses down — he turns their occupants into bacon. Huff is a graphic demonstration that children’s fables can be, indeed, a gateway to torture porn. This Huff will blow you away, too.

EXCLUSIVE video interview with director William Friedkin for ArcLight’s 10th Anniversary

May08
2012
Written by larry411

In a world where movie theaters get an increasingly bad rap for not being as user-friendly as prices would justify, ArcLight Cinemas is making a difference. Few venues elicit the smiles that ArcLight’s premier movie-going experience brings. The Los Angeles-based chain currently has four locations in Hollywood, El Segundo, Pasadena and Sherman Oaks, with a new theater set to open this fall in La Jolla.

This year marks the 10th anniversary of their Hollywood location. To celebrate, ArcLight is presenting a series of “Member’s Choice” movie screenings. Even more exciting, they’re hosting in-depth interviews and informative Q&As all year with the actors, directors, screenwriters, and others responsible for creating the art that goes up on the big screen.

“The Loved Ones” OFFICIAL US THEATRICAL TRAILER, Release June 1

May02
2012
Written by larry411

The Australian horror flick The Loved Ones has been a topic of discussion on this blog for almost three years. My coverage began in July 2009 when I announced that the International Premiere would take place at the Toronto International Film Festival. I attended that screening, which won the Midnight Madness Cadillac People’s Choice Award. Star Xavier Samuel (The Twilight Saga: Eclipse) turns in an agonizingly horrific portrayal of a teen forced to suffer at the hands of classmate Lola (Robin McLeavy), the jilted would-be prom queen. The stunning Victoria Thaine turns in a heartwrenching performance as Holly.

After the 2009 Toronto screening I posted my review (non-spoiler), along with pictures of the Q&A with candids and posed shots following the event, and photos from the pre-party that afternoon.

See you at Texas Frightmare Weekend, World Premiere of “Huff”

May01
2012
Written by larry411

Texas Frightmare Weekend runs from May 4-6 in rockin’ Dallas, Texas. I’ve attended 56 film festivals since the start of 2006 and there isn’t another state in America that hosts events like this with as much spirit and unbridled enthusiasm. “The southwest’s premiere horror convention” is a lot more than just movies, though. Like that state’s SXSW and Fantastic Fest, there are horror memorabilia vendors along with a continuous lineup of celebrity appearances, autograph signings, and exclusive parties in addition to the screenings, panel discussions, and Q&A sessions.

Readers of this blog know of my love for genre films. These generally fall under the “horror” umbrella but can include science fiction, paranormal, and a wide range of spooky and creepy flicks. This weekend should be frightfully packed with ‘em. I’m mainly going for those movies and will try to see as many as possible. I’ll also be photographing the exciting and informative Q&As following screenings as well as meeting the actors and filmmakers. Parties abound although I tend to avoid them in favor of filmgoing. But sometimes a bite to eat and a break from the action are necessary to refuel the body and brain, so there are several schmooze events on my schedule. So, as always, you can expect plenty of pictures and reviews, along with videos and interviews.

2012 Los Angeles Film Festival Complete Lineup

May01
2012
Written by larry411

The 2012 Los Angeles Film Festival takes place from June 14-24. One of the things which makes this festival unique is that it’s sponsored by Film Independent, the same organization responsible for the “Oscars” for indies — the Spirit Awards.

As someone whose life revolves around indies, it’s been truly exciting to attend a festival every year which is run by the same folks who put on the ceremony that honors these movies, as it always has a schedule second-to-none for fans of independent film — or simply great cinema. Plus there are always celebrity guests galore as the event is within a stone’s throw of Hollywood.

2012 Catalina Film Fest honors Stan Lee, hosts West Coast Premiere of Bel Ami

May01
2012
Written by larry411

New film festivals appear on the scene every year that vie for exposure and prestige, especially for indies. Many take place across North America but this is the one on dreamy Catalina Island, the only West Coast resort isle. The second Catalina Film Fest will be taking place from May 4-6 in the exclusive resort town of Catalina, 22 miles off the coast of Los Angeles.

The West Coast Premiere of Declan Donnellan and Nick Ormerod’s Bel Ami will be a festival highlight, along with the World Premiere of Boardwalk Hempire: The Rise and Fall of the Medical Kush Beach Club. Star Tommy Chong is slated to attend. A special screening of Will Hess’ documentary With Great Power: The Stan Lee Story will bring Mr. Lee himself to the festival, who will be presented with the Ronald Reagan Foundation’s Great Communicator Award on opening night. Lee will also attend a special screening of The Avengers.
