Pictures of Parties, People, and the 6th Street Scene at the 2013 SXSW Film Festival

Written by larry411

streetFrom Friday, March 8 to Saturday, March 16, 2013, I attended the spectacular SXSW Film Festival. Since I returned I’ve been reviewing some of the best movies I saw, and will continue posting interviews and videos, along with hundreds of pictures from the many gala red carpets, post-screening Q&As, and other colorful events which took place in connection with the screenings.

In addition to the film-related activities, the festival is known for its many kick-ass parties and one-of-a-kind opportunities for attendees to rub elbows and share information with industry professionals. Although I prefer seeing movies above all else, I always do try to attend some of these other unique events as well, and have put many of these photos in the album linked below.

My pictures of “Coldwater” World Premiere Q&A 2013 SXSW Film Festival + capsule review

coldwaterOn Wednesday, March 13, 2013 I attended the gala World Premiere of Coldwater at the SXSW Film Festival in Austin, Texas. The sold-out screening was held at the legendary Alamo Ritz. The film was a selection in the Narrative Spotlight section.

My career as a movie journalist began in earnest in 2006 when I traveled to the SXSW Film Festival to attend the World Premiere of The Bondage (nee Bondage). It was about a teen (Michael Angarano) who, after being busted for vandalism, feigns mental instability in lieu of being sent to a juvenile lockup, assuming the psychiatric ward would be a better place to be. That film made my first festival Top 10 list.

In 2010, two other related pictures, both at the Philadelphia Film Festival, ended up on my Top 10 from that event. Those films, the Romania/Sweden co-production If I Want to Whistle, I Whistle and the Canada/France/UK co-production Dog Pound, raised the bar a bit more for this oft-explored sub-genre.

My pictures of “Evil Dead” World Premiere Q&A 2013 SXSW Film Festival

evildeadOn Friday, March 8, 2013 I attended the highly-anticipated gala World Premiere of Evil Dead at the SXSW Film Festival in Austin, Texas. The sold-out screening was held at the historic Paramount Theatre. The film was a selection in the Headliners section.

On Opening Night of the 2012 SXSW Film Festival I was sitting in the Paramount Theatre for the World Premiere of Cabin in the Woods, which would go on to become one of my (and many others’) favorites of 2012. Now, exactly one year later to the day, I was, once again, in that same cavernous venue for the Opening Night World Premiere of another “cabin in the woods” film, the Sam Raimi-produced “rebirth” of his 1981 classic Evil Dead. The “cabin” parallel was inescapable — as was the eerie remote house within which our five hapless protagonists find themselves in this crowd-pleasing modern-day telling of the tale.

My pictures of Nikki Reed, Thomas Dekker “Snap” World Premiere Q&A 2013 SXSW Film Festival

snapOn Monday, March 11, 2013 I attended the gala World Premiere of Snap at the SXSW Film Festival in Austin, Texas. The sold-out screening was held at the legendary Alamo Ritz. The film was a selection in the Visions section.

It’s incredibly challenging to write about this enigmatic film without giving anything away and virtually impossible to discuss the story without spoilers, which I try to avoid at any cost. So I’ll just say that the plot is quite dark and deals with some very difficult subject matter. Snap is an intense psychological thriller that can be hard to watch at times and I strongly urge viewers to read a basic synopsis. I’ve also posted a teaser trailer below.

txhsshortsOn Saturday, March 16, 2013 I attended the wonderful Texas High School Shorts program at the SXSW Film Festival in Austin, Texas. The event was held at the Vimeo Theater in the Austin Convention Center.

Almost all festivals include short films in their lineups and I try to see them whenever possible. At SXSW there are 11 Shorts Programs. One that is always particularly special and exciting is the screening of the Texas High School Shorts, for these are our future filmmakers.

My review of “Imagine” North American Premiere at the 2013 SXSW Film Festival

imagineOn Thursday, March 14, 2013 I attended the North American Premiere of Imagine at the SXSW Film Festival. The sold-out screening was held at the intimate Violet Crown Cinema in Austin, Texas. The film was a selection in the Festival Favorites section, having triumphed at festivals including Warsaw and Göteborg.

No two festivals are exactly alike, and this year’s SXSW is a perfect example. At past fests over half the films I’ve seen have been foreign, many subtitled, and often made up a significant percentage of my Top Picks. This year, by chance, I only saw five non-U.S. films — two documentaries and three narratives, including one from Canada. That leaves only two narrative features from overseas out of the 39 screenings I attended this year.

My review of “Artifact” at the 2013 SXSW Film Festival

Written by larry411

artifactOn Saturday, March 16, 2013, I attended a gala screening of Artifact at the SXSW Film Festival in Austin, Texas. The event took place in the 645-seat Vimeo Theater at the Austin Convention Center. The documentary was a selection in the 24 Beats Per Second section.

One doesn’t need in-depth knowledge of the music industry to be a film journalist and appreciate rock docs or movies about record labels, copyright laws, and piracy…but it helps. Prior to this stage in my life I spent over 20 years as a rock radio DJ in the country’s fourth largest market, band manager, concert promoter, and record producer. So my experience in that world is actually much greater than my relatively new, just under a decade-long career as a film festival and independent film reporter. This gives me a uniquely dual perspective and, I hope, qualifies me to accurately and incisively comment on movies such as the Napster documentary Downloaded, TPB AFK: The Pirate Bay Away From Keyboard, and Artifact, along with the Green Day docs Broadway Idiot and ¡Cuatro!, In Your Dreams – Stevie Nicks, Good Ol’ Freda, and Dave Grohl’s Sound City, all of which I saw at the just-concluded 2013 SXSW Film Festival.

2013 Palm Beach International Film Festival Complete Lineup of Music Videos and Shorts

Mar21
2013
Written by larry411

logopbiff2Yesterday I posted the complete lineup of features at the 18th Palm Beach International Film Festival, taking place from April 4-11.

The Official Opening Night Film is Steven Bernstein’s Decoding Annie Parker, starring Maggie Grace, Oscar winner Helen Hunt, Samantha Morton (as Anne Parker), Rashida Jones, and Aaron Paul. Based on a true story, the film follows two women on remarkable journeys over 15 years. The brave, very funny, and always irreverent Anne Parker watches her family stalked and devastated by a cruel illness, and as singular her pirit, she is still deeply affected as she is left virtually alone in the world. Mary Claire King, a brilliant geneticist, believes there is a genetic link to the type of cancer that afflicts people like Annie but few believe her and even fewer support her.

2013 Palm Beach International Film Festival Complete Lineup of Features

Mar20
2013
Written by larry411

logopbiff2In the eight exciting years I’ve been covering film festivals my travels have taken me across the United States and into Canada. I’ve attended over 60 fests since the start of 2006 and most are quite familiar to my readers, especially those major international events which I’ve reported from on an annual basis: Sundance, SXSW, and Toronto, along with regional festivals including Tribeca, Woodstock, Los Angeles, the Hamptons, Philadelphia, Fantastic Fest, Williamstown, GenArt, Sedona, Santa Barbara, Fort Lauderdale, New Hampshire, and many more.

Having relocated from the New York/Philadelphia area to South Florida 18 months ago, the festivals of the northeast U.S. are no longer as accessible to me as they were in the past. However, hometown events like the Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival, which I covered this past October-November, are within easy reach and allowed me to see over 100 films in 22 days.

2013 SXSW Film Festival — My Top Picks

Mar20
2013
Written by larry411

logob2013aThe fun-filled 2013 SXSW Film Festival has come to an exciting conclusion and I’ve returned home to sunny South Florida to take stock of my whirlwind 10 days in Austin, Texas. As I have for the past several years, I used Twitter to report from the events as they happened. Hopefully you followed along and were able to join me in experiencing the festival in real time.

The quality of this year’s lineup was truly extraordinary, as usual, resulting in one of the most memorable experiences I’ve had there in the eight years I’ve been attending. SXSW 2013 wowed me from the start, so it’s a formidable challenge for me to narrow down my favorites to just a few. But, as I do following every festival (62 since the start of 2006), this wrapup will conclude with my list of Top Picks.

Latest news on the “Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters” trailer

Mar06
2013
Written by larry411

0306som2It was back in March 2009 when I first announced here on this site that Logan Lerman would be taking over the lead role in the first film based on the popular five-part Percy Jackson & The Olympians book series from author Rick Riordan. Directed by Harry Potter’s Chris Columbus, that movie, Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief, opened February 12, 2010 and made over $226 million worldwide at the box office.

Fans were then eagerly awaiting a greenlight for the second film in the series, knowing that Percy Jackson was planned as a potential franchise for distributor Twentieth-Century Fox. They waited…and waited…until rumors began to spread that there would be no “sequel” after all. Within the industry, however, that kind of talk made little sense. The picture was a success by any measure. The fact is, many factors have to come together before such a massive project can be officially underway. In order for a movie to go into development a quality script must be delivered. Then financing can be obtained and the wheels set in motion to move the film into the next stage of production.

EXCLUSIVE new photos of “Twilight” star Michael Welch

Written by larry411

i2shirlessmikeWe’ve been following the exploding career of young actor Michael Welch for several years on this blog. He wowed audiences around the world as the hapless human Mike Newton in four films of The Twilight Saga — Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse, and Breaking Dawn – Part 1, four of the most successful motion pictures of all time. Together, those blockbuster movies brought in over $2.5 billion worldwide at the box office.

The 25-year-old has certainly had quite a long and distinguished career — working on 30 feature films since the age of 10, along with four television movies and close to 100 television episodes, either as guest spots or as a series regular.
